Nikos Xanthoulis

Dr. Nikos Xanthoulis is a composer, ancient lyre player, researcher. artistic consultant at the Greek National Opera and professor of Harmony, Counterpoint and composition at the Conservatory of Athens, Greece. He is a Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America (from 2010) and also Assistant Researcher with the Academy of Athens. From 1983 to 2008 he served as the principal trumpet player in the Greek National Opera Orchestra and from 2009 till 2012 he was heading the Educational Department of the same Opera. Tutor at the Greek Open University from 2004 to 2017. As a composer and soloist, he has presented his music in Greece and Internationally (in more than 30 countries). His published works include translations of ancient Greek music theoreticians. Kress Lecturer for the Archaeological Institute of America in 2012-2013 and 2017-2018 lecturing and performing in many American universities (Stanford, Berklee, Hawaii, Purdue etc) From 2014 to 2015 he was the Artistic Director of Public Broadcasting Orchestras and Choir (ERT).

Four Russian theatres have included in their repertoires his music for ancient tragedies (Moscow, Simferopol, Omsk and Vladivostok). In 2018 he published the first learning method of the 7 string lyre. His operas and incidental music are presented in Greece and abroad. The last two years has a fruitful collaboration with the playwright Christoforos Christofis presenting their musical dramas in the Athens Concert Hall and in many ancient Greek theaters.

He is considered worldwide the Musician who revived the ancient Greek seven-string Lyre, having built a firm technique as a soloist and composed an abundant repertoire on the instrument.
